This visually dazzling animated work by independent filmmaker Nina Paley almost defies description. Using the latest animation software, Paley was able to make this feature length production entirely on her own without a crew of animators. Sita is a mashup of Paley’s own story of a breakup with a convoluted telling of the Ramayana, a Sanskrit epic, embellished by the songs of the late jazz artist, Annette Hanshaw.
Historical Note
Paley is an outspoken champion of free media who made Sita Sings the Blues available for free download immediately after learning her distributor was charging $300 for a DVD copy.
