About
Murder, betrayal, and blackmail abound in this atmospheric film noir. Barbara Stanwyck leads a cast of 1940s icons that includes Van Heflin, Judith Anderson, Lizabeth Scott and, in his first movie role, an intense Kirk Douglas. Oscar-nominated for its screenplay, admired for its striking black-and-white cinematography, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers keeps the audience guessing until the very end of its complex and unpredictable plot.
Historical Note
The film contains scenes that were directed by cinematographer Byron Haskins and producer Hal Wallis while director Lewis Milestone was out on strike. This may explain some of the unexpected emotional shifts in the drama.
