About
Teenagers from Outer Space is a low-budget 1959 sci-fi cult classic directed by Tom Graeff. The film follows a group of alien youths who arrive on Earth with a grim mission: to use the planet as a feeding ground for gargantuan lobster-like creatures called Gargons. Among the alien crew is Derek, a rebellious young man who discovers that humans are actually a peaceful species—and that the colony’s plans will lead to their destruction.
Derek escapes from his oppressive commander, Thor, and blends in with the local townspeople, including a friendly young woman named Betty and her grandfather. As Derek grows closer to them, he becomes determined to stop the invasion and prevent Earth from becoming the Gargons’ breeding ground. Meanwhile, Thor hunts Derek through the small California town, armed with a deadly ray gun that can instantly reduce people to skeletons.
Despite its extremely limited budget, unconventional acting, and unintentional humor, the movie has gained a devoted following for its charming earnestness, DIY special effects, and campy 1950s sci-fi vibe. Over the years, it has become a beloved entry in the “so-bad-it’s-good” movie canon, appearing on late-night TV, fan compilations, and cult cinema festivals.
